Tour Day Two 11/116

I’m noticing certain redeeming quiet qualities of New York City denizens. They scurry and groove to their own semi-silent soundtrack. Shifting to avoid the invisible thumb that desires to cram them into a box, into a label. A quiet defiance that bubbles low, simmering, barely noticeable, acts as a thin impenetrable shell; it keeps the personal breathable atmosphere in; it is a conductor.

I stood outside a service laundry business and watched the women sit on bags of clothes, sheets, and unmentionables. Sweat, seemingly tropical, spotted their faces; their faces bright with smiles spoke measures of happiness. Not joy. Happiness. There could not have been any real career counseling for them. Their guidance department was their hearts or their fate. Fate. Funny as it is, a true contentment mixed with the steam and damp fabrics.

Fate is the ultimate life coach, no? It sits above us, every one of us… the man named giant that half of us humans dread while the other half laughs. I had been thinking about our Faith and our Fate. Neither of which can be empirically broken down; although, Thom McHugh would probably argue against that very assumption. Words composted by Linton Elementary:

Faith never wavers
You are the one who
Veers and shutters
Dodge and fade.

God, if that is the
Concept to address,
He is the one lacking
Human flaws.

He doesn’t shift
So easy in his heart
His direction, solid
And fantastic.

To imitate, to walk
Those steps, there is
An impossible task
Without equal.

We walk in measured
Steps, calculated for us
By speakers or truths
Old mouths, antique spittle.

Not being God allows
For some wiggle room
Just enough slack
To walk astray.

The show was fantastic... we even had a surprise guest... venerable Mick Ferraro, bass player in an old band of mine, swept in to the club in a most elegant and masculine manner. We talked of the past, we talked of the future... we talked of music... great crowd showed up! 12-13 folks listened intently... it was fun... later in the evening we stayed with Nate Schweber of the New Heathens and ended up zipping through a few songs, late night...
