There is a really good article in the Wall St Journal Weekend edition April 4, which some smart, literary teens might enjoy. It is written by Alexander McCall Smith, a popular fictional author. He writes in the article about how reader expectations influence how an author develops his characters and plots. In particular, he writes: "For the author, this sense that the reader has of the reality of the story has serious implications for how characters are treated in the novels. It is one of the jobs of fiction to report on the sorrows and tragedies of this world. This must be done, though, from a morally acceptable standpoint." He goes on to explore how readers help determine where that morality line of the author is located, and why readers care so much "...I suspect that many of us continue to experience fictional characters and events as being, in some way, real. This is because the imaginative act of following a story involves a suspension of disbelief, as we enter the world it creates."
